Short courses in Sydney. How can they help get you a job?
International students are already studying full-time and are often trying to find a casual or part-time job. We know living in Sydney is expensive and you need money to pay for the basics and have a great time while you are here. For certain jobs in Australia, you will need some kind of formal training to get the job. These are three of the short courses available, that can help you to get across the line.
Responsible Service of Alcohol
A Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) certificate will allow you to serve alcohol in bars, restaurants, etc. You must have this certificate to get the job. In NSW you will need to pay for a photo card along with the course fees. There are plenty of places to do this short course. Have a look online for a full list. Or you could try here and here. If you want to work in a bar, The Coffee School offers cocktail making also. That sounds like a fun course!
Responsible Service of Gaming (RSG)/Responsible Conduct of Gambling (RCG)
For some workers in the liquor and gaming sector, it is mandatory to have an RSG/RCG. These courses are useful combinations with an RSA. For example, if you want to work in a pub that has poker machines, you will need to have this certificate as well. It is great to have both and could make it easier to get a job.
Try a Barista Course
If you are looking to get part-time work in a coffee shop, you should do a barista course. Not only will it teach you the basics of coffee-making using professional machinery, but some even come with latte art classes to help you turn your drinks into works of art. ‘Sydneysiders’ are very serious about their coffee and a barista course will help you to feel confident in knowing all of the combinations of milk, coffee, water and sugar that people will ask for. SELC Education offers The English for Customer Service Communication (ECSC) course, which is designed for students wanting to acquire a working knowledge of the functional English required for employment in a café or restaurant. Students gain the professional qualifications they need to secure employment throughout Australia. Students love the combination of learning English and making coffee for everyone.
SELC offers courses in English, Business, Fitness and Early Childhood Education and Care studies, in the heart of the Sydney CBD and Bondi Junction. We encourage students to live the full Australian experience, while they are here studying with us. This includes us supporting you to find work in Sydney.
