Making new friends as an international student can be a hard thing to do.
However making friends in a new country, can be one of the best parts about moving so far from home. If you have a full schedule with studying and work, as well as cultural differences it can be hard to know where to start. To make it easier, here are the three top tips to meet new people while studying in Sydney.
Find people who share your interests.
It is easier to make friends with people when you have the same interests. It gives you something to talk about immediately. Getting online, and seeing what is happening around you, can be a great place to start. Sporting events, food and wine, music festivals etc are great places to start. Time Out, Concrete Playground and The Urban List will have something for everyone.
Get to know the social activities where you study.
The closest place to look are the classes that you are enrolled in. Most of the students in your class have come to Sydney without knowing anyone. Say hello and see if you can find someone willing to do something with you. Many colleges and universities have social clubs and activities on a regular basis. Check out their website or notice boards around the campus. Many colleges have elective classes. These are non-compulsory classes, with different topics. these are a great way of meeting new people in a relaxed setting. Sign your name up and see what happens.
Network and use your connections.
Once you have established a small group of friends, try to extend yourself and meet their friends. If they have met people through other classes or social activities, then try to tag along. There are many activities that you can do in groups including team sports, study groups, trivia nights in pubs etc. If new people join your class, then don’t forget to invite them along and introduce them to the people that you have met. Ask them to bring someone along with them and extend the friendship group further. This is a great way to meet people that you could be friends with for the rest of your life.
