Studying vocational education in Sydney can be a great option.
Vocational education includes courses that give you a qualification at a Certificate or Diploma level. Some courses are available for international students and they are a great stepping stone to studying higher education. For many professions in Australia though, a Diploma is enough to hold. Here is what you should know about vocational education (VET) in Australia.
Vocational study is increasingly popular among international students.
Of the total 589,860 international enrolments in 2014, almost 150,000 were in the VET sector (Department of Education and Training, 2014). Each year more and more international students enrol into vocational courses. You will find some fantastic colleges in Sydney, where the training is of a high quality. You will also be supported to enjoy your time, while you are living here.
Vocational courses are offered by different types of providers.
The main three providers include government-owned Technical and Further Education (TAFE) institutes, private colleges (RTOs) and universities. A number of Australian universities operate as dual-sector institutions — meaning they offer everything from certificates to diplomas and higher degrees. Some TAFE institutes also offer bachelor degrees, providing useful pathways into higher education. Many educational institutions have organised pathways between courses. Talk to your educational agent about the pathway options that are best for you.
The VET sector can be more accessible than higher education.
You will need to meet a number of entry requirements to study a vocational course. Entry can require completion of schooling, equivalent to Australian Year 12. There will be other requirements, such as satisfying prerequisites for English language levels. Check with the college you would like to study at for more information.
Courses in the VET sector have shorter duration than higher education degrees.
While a degree might take three, four (or even five) years to complete, a vocational certificate or diploma might take as little as six months or a year. You can start by studying a Certificate and then decide if you would like to go onto the Diploma or Advanced Diploma qualification.
