Things to do in the heat of a Sydney Summer.
Sydney can get very hot. The last few years has seen January hit up to 46 degrees Celsius (114 degrees Fahrenheit !!) and it can be difficult to get anything done. Some people love this heat and feel energetic, while others crave a cool place to spend the day. Here are some things to do in the heat, Sydney style.
Australian’s love the water. Many have their own pool in their backyards. If you don’t have access to one of those though, then there are other options. Local pools are fun and have different sized pools, to suit children and different swimming abilities. Many have water slides and cafes so that you can stay for as long as you like. Most pools have a charge to get in. Consider taking your own food to save some money. Of course Sydney is packed with amazing beaches. You just need to pick your favourite one. Make sure you stay safe and swim between the flags. Some beaches have pools or baths next to the ocean, and they are full of ocean water. Make sure your swimming choice, matches your swimming ability.
Go to the movies.
Sitting quietly in a dark, air conditioned room is a great way to get out of the heat. Aim for a session in the middle of the day or mid afternoon, this is when Sydney tends to be the hottest. Add a meal before or after the movie and you will have been cool for at least a few hours. Don’t forget to grab an ice cream or gelato to keep you cool.
Do some shopping.
Shopping centres can get busy on hot days but if you get there early enough you can utilise the air conditioning to keep cool. Browse around your favourite stores, have something to eat or a cool drink and relax. Cafe life is very big in Sydney and you will find them everywhere. If you can pick one close to the beach or ocean, then you might get a cool breeze while you enjoy an iced coffee.
Read or watch TV.
If you are lucky enough to have air conditioning at home or at a friend’s place, then you may not want to go anywhere. Pick up a good book or watch some TV and relax. Once the southerly breeze hits in the afternoon (if you are lucky!), it will cool down and you can get back outside and have some fun.
